Abilene, Kan. -The Eisenhower Presidential Library will host "How Sputnik Jumpstarted Gifted Education and Talent Development" on May 28, 2026, at 12 p.m. CDT. This hybrid Lunch & Learn program will be held in the Library's indoor courtyard and streamed live via YouTube. Guests attending in person should arrive by 11:45 a.m. The library will provide a light box-lunch on a first-come, first-served basis.
Dr. Jennifer Jolly, a prominent expert in gifted education, will join the program virtually to examine the transformative era of federal investment following the Soviet Union's 1957 space milestone. This session highlights the critical education legislation passed during the Eisenhower administration.
The launch of Sputnik I on October 4, 1957, catalyzed an unprecedented national focus on cultivating American talent. This shift resulted in the historic National Defense Education Act, which established vital funding for research and educational opportunities ranging from elementary programs to post-graduate scholarships. We will explore the lasting legacy of these initiatives and their continued influence on educational services for high-ability students today.
Dr. Jolly is the Head of Department and a professor of gifted education at the Education University of Hong Kong. An accomplished researcher and co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal for the Education of the Gifted, Dr. Jolly previously served on the board of the National Association for Gifted Children and began her career teaching in Texas public schools.
The 2026 programming season is dedicated to celebrating America's 250th anniversary. Join us throughout the year as we examine President Eisenhower's top accomplishments in the continual pursuit of a more perfect Union. These programs are all made possible courtesy of The Eisenhower Foundation.
