At Easel: Ike the Painter

How a joke became a lifelong hobby

While artist Thomas Stephens painted a portrait of Mamie, Ike attempted to create his own version resulting in a good laugh for the group. In jest, Stephens sent Ike a painting kit as a gift the next day sparking a new passion. We have 30 original Eisenhower paintings in our collection.
