Eisenhower Presidential Library Hosts Author Talk and Book Signing for "Rising Star, Setting Sun"

ABILENE, Kan. — The Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum is pleased to announce an in-person author event and book signing featuring John T. Shaw, author of Rising Star, Setting Sun: Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, and the Presidential Transition that Changed America. The event will take place on Tuesday, June 30, at 6:00 p.m. in the Visitors Center auditorium.
Rising Star, Setting Sun explores the complex and consequential transition of power between the 34th and 35th Presidents of the United States. More than a simple change in leadership, this period between November 1960 and January 1961 triggered a generational shift in American politics, policy, and culture.
The book examines the stark contrasts between Eisenhower and Kennedy—including their families, backgrounds, and visions for the nation—while highlighting the influence of Richard Nixon and Lyndon Johnson during this pivotal time. The narrative culminates in the historic delivery of two of America’s most significant speeches: Eisenhower’s Farewell Address and Kennedy’s Inaugural Address.
John T. Shaw, Director of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute, brings years of experience as a Washington, DC-based reporter and political analyst to this discussion. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with the author during the presentation and participate in a book signing following the talk. Books will be available for purchase at the Eisenhower Library gift shop.
This program is part of "Ike’s Book Club," an initiative of the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum designed to foster deep discussion on subjects related to the Eisenhower Presidency.
